Quick Movie Review: Solaris (2002)

Solaris (2002)

Bottomline: An especially slow piece of science fiction that tests the patience of even the most ardent sci-fi fan.

Where Can I See This Movie? It's in the rotation on a movie channel or two and it's available for rent.

Where Have I Seen Natascha McElhone? She is in one of my favorite action flicks -- Ronin (1998).

Quick Movie Review: In theory, this movie should work. It's directed by Steven Soderbergh. It stars George Clooney. It co-stars Natascha McElhone. It co-stars Viola Davis (yes, the Oscar nominee). It starts off strong but then loses its way once we get to Solaris. Clooney plays a psychologist who is called to investigate strange happenings at an outpost stationed at the distant planet of Solaris. And, boy, there are some weird things happening -- like, for example, Clooney's dead wife showing up as flesh and blood on the space station. It seems the planet is messing with them and it's doing a fine job of it. One of the more interesting moments of the film occurs, unfortunately, at the end. Clooney faces a difficult choice but makes the choice you expect.
