Quick Movie Review: Bad Lieutenant-Port of Call New Orleans (2009)

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (2009)

Bottomline: Sloppy direction, sloppy acting, sloppy acting lead to a sloppy movie.

Special Note: Nicolas Cage is horrible in this film, but the good news is Moonstruck (1987) has just been released on Blu-Ray. Get it.

QMR Opinion: I’ve seen plenty of films where I enjoyed Nicolas Cage. Most recently, I can recommend Kick-Ass (2010). I have never seen a film that I liked that was directed by Werner Herzog. In the documentary Grizzly Man (2005), I started to root for the bears. In this mess, Cage plays Terence McDonough, who is addicted to drugs, gambling and a prostitute (played by Eva Mendes). As it turns out, McDonough is a detective in post-Katrina New Orleans. Cage plays McDonough on the edge the entire film – he’s constantly high, scamming drugs and being a general jack ass. It gets incredibly boring after a while. Then you have Val Kilmer doing something – I’m not quite sure – as a police detective. And, out of nowhere, one of my favorite actresses staggers onto the scene – Jennifer Coolidge. To make matters worse, I actually think Cage is wearing guyliner throughout the film – I guess as an attempt to make him look more dark.
