Quick Movie Review: Kick-Ass (2010)
Kick-Ass (2010)
Bottomline: Starts strong and ends in a mess.
Where Can I See It? It is available for rent on DVD
CAVEAT: This movie is Rated R and for good reason. It is ultra violent and uses beaucoup rough language.
QMR Opinion:
The movie is based on a terrific concept. What would happen if a normal teen just decided one day to be a super hero? Get the mask. Maybe a weapon or two. And then go and do good. Such is the case of Dave Lizewski, who decides to create the super hero, Kick-Ass. Let’s be kind and say it doesn’t really turn out that well – in the beginning and pretty much through to the end. In the meantime, he crosses paths with others who share this passion. This is an ultra-violent film with a ton of blood spray both with on-screen squibs and CG bloodspray added in post production. Plus, there is a lot of bad language and dark humor. This movie is not for everyone. The interesting premise starts out strong and carries well throughout the film until the last 30 minutes or so when the movies ends in an incomprehensible mess. I've always been puzzled by how our intrepid hero can kick the ass of 14 to 20 henchmen with little more than a paperclip and then find himself on the verge of death against the head bad guy. It's a worn out device and needs to be retired. The break-out star for me here is Chloe Moretz. She is fantastic as Mindy/Hit Girl even though it is slightly off-putting to see her use language that will curl your hair and kill with impunity.
