Quick Movie Review: Twilight (2008)

Twilight (2008)

Bottomline: This movie is the cure for insomnia.

I was sucked into this vortex by seeing a portion of Twilight: New Moon (review to come later) while my daughter was watching it. It looked interesting and I thought that I should set aside my biases and go ahead and give Twilight a shot. I did and it turns out my biases were justified. This is one of the most incredibly mind-numbingly and tediously boring movies I've seen in a long, long time. It's hard to put your finger on exactly what it is that makes it so boring but let's start with the plodding direction (stare into the camera -- now hold it); the ridiculous dialog (apparently vampires and teens who live in Forks can only speak in simple, declarative sentences); and the horrific acting (Kristen Stewart maintains the exact same non-descript expression throughout this film). If you've seen the trailer then you've seen all the action that is in the entire film. The rest of the movie is composed of lots of staring -- at each other, into space, at the sky, at the snow, in slow motion. I think the director was trying to have the characters appear introspective. Instead, it had me reaching for a magazine.
