Quick Movie Review: Soldier (1998)

Soldier (1998)

Bottomline: One of my all-time favorite "doughnut" movies.

Favorite Quote: Sandra (Connie Nielsen): "But one soldier against seventeen, what are you going to do?" Todd (Kurt Russell): "I'm going to kill them all, sir."

QMR Opinion: Look, there are some movies that are just good junk food. These are what I call "doughnut" movies. They are delicious going down but do not fill you up. You want emotional depth? You want high quality screenwriting? You want award-winning acting? Then you need to look elsewhere. These movies are designed for folks just wanting an hour and a half of escapist entertainment. In my opinion, there are few doughnut movies better than Solider. Starring an incredibly pumped up Kurt Russell, this tells the story of a born-to-kill soldier who finds himself replaced by a "better model" in the form of an even more pump up Jason Scott Lee. There are some "slow" emotional scenes designed to fill the movie out a bit, but this flick is all about the action and you get plenty of it. You also get the added bonus of a smarmy Jason Isaacs (yes, the blonde death eater Lucius Malfoy from Harry Potter) and the ever-popular Gary Busey.
