Quick Movie Review: Sucker Punch (2011)
Sucker Punch (2011)
Bottomline: Highly stylized action film that you should wait to rent.
Quick Note: Based on reviews of this film by respected film critics, you may be under the impression that this is the worst movie ever made and heralds the end of the movie industry as we know it. Uh, no, it's not. It's a decent flick but is definitely a rental.
This Movie is Directed by Zach Snyder. What Else Has He Directed? He has directed 300 (2006), which I liked, and Watchmen (2009), which I wasn't crazy about.
QMR Opinion: Emily Browning plays Baby Doll who is committed to a mental institution by her abusive stepfather. To escape the terror of the abuse she must endure inside the mental institution, Baby Doll constructs an alternative reality that includes some of her fellow inmates. She wants to escape and, as such, must complete a series of challenges to find five items. All of this is guided by the one and only Scott Glenn. Look. . .you can tell by the trailer what kind of a movie this is -- it's a bombastic, fast-paced action flick starring some really good looking females who kick butt and take names. The music is loud. The explosions are plentiful. There is slo-mo action. There is lots of handheld camera work. It's exciting but, at the end of the day, is a doughnut of a movie that is trying hard to be a sizzling steak. Be prepared, though, even though it's PG-13, it is violent and it is disturbing. The movie is at its best when the girls are kicking butt. However, the minute the music stops and we are left with everyone acting and speaking, the movie really bogs down. The acting is not good. The writing is rough and is very elementary. And, as odd as it sounds, the supposed Polish accent of Dr. Gorski, played by Carla Gugino, is incredibly distracting because it is just so so bad. Geeks and fans of Zack Snyder will get exactly what they paid for and then some, but, for my money, it would have been better to wait for the DVD rental.
