Quick Movie Review: Winter's Bone (2010)

Winter's Bone (2010)

Bottomline: Overrated. Waaaaaayyyyyy overrated.

Where Can I See This? It’s available for rent on DVD.

What’s a Better Movie Illustrating Life Amongst Mountain Folk? Go back and watch Deliverance (1972)

QMR Opinion: I am on the outside looking in with this film. Critics LOVE this movie. It has landed on most critics’ top 10 lists and has ended up in the Top 5 for many folks. Don’t buy it. The movie tells the story of a young Ozark mountain girl played by Jennifer Lawrence who must find her father or the family gets kicked off their land. She visits rough folks and, guess what, they are rough. There’s a lot of talking. A bunch of mumbling. A little cussing. It’s a “gritty” look life in the Ozarks. We know this because there’s a lot of meth. Some weed. And a bunch of teen moms. All the men are uneducated gun owners with really bad dental work. Everyone looks bored and the movie is unbelievably boring. Lawrence is okay but standouts are John Hawkes as Teardrop and Dale Dickey at one of Thump’s women. This movie feels like it wants to look like a documentary but the direction is so plodding and the acting is so wooden that the entire effect is more of a redneck home movie.
