Son of Rambow (2007)
Bottomline: Terrific little English film well worth you time -- imaginative and heartwarming.
Where Can I See It? It is available for rent on DVD
QMR Opinion: I am a sucker for any movie that involves kids being kids -- using their imaginations, dealing with parents, navigating relationships with adults, yearning for freedom, etc. So while I had heard some mumblings about this movie, it didn't occur to me that it was right in my wheelhouse. And so it is. Son of Rambow tells the story of two young English schoolboys who strike up an unlikely friendship thanks to their mutual desire to produce a blockbuster action film. Garth Jennings does a masterful job of directing two first-time young actors -- Bill Milner as Will Proudfoot and Will Poulter as Lee Carter -- in this delightfully imginative and surprisingly touching film. Because of the focus on the children and how well developed they are in the film, the adults tend to get short-shrift and are relegated to cliche status. Adults = No Fun. Then there is a scene toward the end of the film that is completely cliche when a key adult character turns their back on the only world they've ever known. I would recommend this movie to children 13 and up but, be forewarned, there is some moderately bad language and an uncomfortable moment or two. And I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who is a child at heart.
