Quick Movie Review: Gasland (2010)

Gasland (2010)

Bottomline: Excellent and thought-provoking documentary that should be required for viewing for anyone who is in or near an area where energy companies are harvesting natural gas.

Why Should I Care About Fracking? Because it could soon be coming to a town near you. Here is a link to an article on al.com about a fracking program being implemented in west Alabama: http://blog.al.com/businessnews/2010/07/hydraulic_fracturing_scheduled.html

QMR Opinion: My favorite documentaries are those that inspire, encourage and generate emotion. Josh Fox has produced a documentary that will certainly generate some type of emotion -- anger at Josh. Anger at the energy industry. Definitely anguish at the plight of less fortunate Americans who have seen their drinking water contaminated through unsafe fracking practices. I'm no tree hugger, but I am also not blind. When you watch more than one person actually set fire to their tap water, then you know something is not right. When you see documented on film the myriad number of health problems that have resulted from fracking chemicals mixing with drinking water, then you know something has gone awry. At the same time, I have to hold out hope that the energy industry is working to improve the process and is working to prevent the contamination of drinking water because of our zeal in wanted to get at the natural gas that sits deep within the earth. To read Energen officials (see article link above) quoted as saying that there is no evidence that fracking has contaminated any drinking water is to realize how important documentaries like Fox's are. Because they show how delusional this type of thinking is. This documentary is an important one and should be required viewing.
