District 9 (2009)
Bottomline: Worth the price of a rental.
Pros: Different take of the sci-fi genre (sort of). Story is fascinating.
Cons: Numerous movie rip-offs. Story direction goes off the rails at the midway point. Unnecessarily gross in certain parts.
Where Can I See It? It is still in theaters as I write this but I would wait for the DVD.
Warning: The movie earns its "R" rating because the alien weaponry literally blows people and aliens apart -- blood and guts splatter on the camera lens over and over.
QMR Opinion: This movie has been out a while so there really isn't much I can add to what you probably have already heard. As fate would have it, I happened to be in Los Angeles a while back and saw extensive guerilla marketing for this movie -- some of the best I've ever seen. A lot of the reviews I saw on D9 said that this was a "different" movie than the normal summer fare. That it was more intelligent. The problem is -- it's not. It does take an interesting twist on the sci-fi genre with the aliens being stranded on earth. And, yes, there is a heavy MESSAGE at the beginning of the movie. But at some point, the writers and directors said to themselves, "Hey, we need to pump up the action." And they do. The lead character goes berserk. He befriends an alien (sort of). They start blowing people apart (literally). Then you see clear rip-offs of Alien (1979), The Fly (1986), and Robocop (1987).
