Quick Movie Review: Happy-Go-Lucky (2008)

Should I See This Movie?
Yes. It is a good movie to settle down and watch as a couple.

Why Should I See This Movie?
Well, see this movie for no other reason than to enjoy Sally Hawkins' performance as Poppy. Also there is a terrific performance turned in by Eddie Marsan as an extremely disturbed driving instructor. My other favorite secondary role has to be Karina Fernandez as the Flamenco dance instructor.

Who Directed This Movie?
Mike Leigh. He also wrote the screenplay (for which he was nominated for an Oscar). Other movies he's directed include Vera Drake (2004), Topsy-Turvy (1999) and Secrets & Lies (1996).

What In the Heck Does the Title Mean?
It describes perfectly the lead character, Poppy. She is an irrepressibly happy school teacher. Yes, she gets on your nerves at first but then you realize that she's not a ditz. She just refuses to let life get her down. Frankly, I find her attitude admirable.

What's This Movie Rated?
It's Rated "R." And for the life of me, I have no idea why. But, honestly, I don't think anyone under the age of 17 would want to see this movie anyway.

What Do I Need to Know Before I See This Movie?
Probably the most important thing is that it is all British all the time. British director. British actors. British sets. British idioms. If you're not used to watching Brits on screen (TV or film) then it may take you a few minutes to understand what they are saying.

Is the Movie Depressing?
No, it's not. But there are what appear to be funny moments that turn serious -- especially the interaction with the driving instructor. The movie follows along the path of Poppy -- don't let life get you down.

Where Can I See This Movie?
You can rent it on DVD.
