What a beautiful chapter. I have always loved it when Jesus prayed. And pray He did. He prayed before every big decision or major act. I love it when He prayed because when people ask: “Why do you pray?” I can say: “Well, if it’s good enough for Jesus Christ, then it’s good enough for me.”
He starts off praying for Himself, then praying for His disciples then for future believers. The interesting aspect about His prayer for Himself in verses 1-5, is that He ends up praying for others. See verse 2: “For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.”
Starting in verse 6 – what a beautiful prayer for His disciples and for His friends. Verse 8: “For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted the. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me.”
In verses 15-17, we see Jesus praying that His disciples are protected from the Evil One – not necessarily death. Verse 17: “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.”
What a terrific prayer for future believers. Verse 23: “I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” Have we fulfilled that desire? Are we all as one? Are we in complete unity?
Amen.
