Notes on the Gospel of John: Chapter 16

Jesus continues his attempts to comfort and reassure His disciples here. While true, that first sentence seems odd in light of verse 1 where Jesus basically tells all of them that they will be run out of their synagogues and, yes, killed in the name of God. Jesus has never been shy about letting His disciples know that the way will be tough but this is clear language letting them know that if they continue down this path with Christ, they will most likely not survive.

In verse 13, Jesus continues the theme of the Holy Spirit being with them even after He is gone.

In particular in this chapter, I like verses 25-33. Here we get a conversation that I think we have all had with ourselves while reading the Gospel and working to understand the message of Christ. Jesus says that soon will come a time when He will no longer speak metaphorically. And the reaction from the Disciples is priceless – “Now we get it!! Now we believe!!”

Amen
