Quick Movie Review: The Killing (1956)

The Killing (1956)

Bottomline: Terrific film noir directed by the one and only Stanley Kubrick.

QMR Opinion: What a fun movie. This movie covers a couple of genres – film noir and heist and stars the one and only Spencer Hayden. We’re also treated to some terrific character actors – Elisha Cook (you’ll recognize him when you see him) and Marie Windsor who plays the traditional film noir slut (and, yes, she gets what’s coming to her) -- "You have a dollar sign where most women have a heart." This classic shows how the best laid plans can go horribly awry when a stupid dame gets mixed up in the whole thing. Plus there’s a little mix-up with a carry-on that leads to a mishap on the runway involving a dog. The screenplay was written by Jim Thompson, who made a living writing terrific hard-boiled dialog in movies and pulp fiction. Take a look at this film and see the inspiration for Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs (1992).
