Saints and Soldiers (2003)
Bottomline: Deeply moving and personal war movie.
This small independent film racked up all sorts of film festival awards and deservedly so. Many times the best war movies are those told simply, personally and intimately. Using the massacre at Malmady as its backdrop, this film tells the story of four American soldiers and one British soldier trying to survive behind enemy lines while trying to get important information to Allied forces. No actor in this movie is a "big name" but they all do an excellent job along with even-handed direction from Ryan Little. We have gotten used to big, sprawling war movie epics of late. This tight little film is an excellent example of nuance and poignancy told through the eyes of just five soldiers thrown together for a common goal.
