R.I.P: Patrick Swayze

Patrick Swayze (R.I.P.)

As you no doubt know by now, Patrick Swayze died of pancreatic cancer on Monday, Sept. 14, at the age of 57. I'll be honest here and say that I was never a huge fan of Swayze's but he was a ubiquitous presence during the '80s and, as such, was an integral part of my pop culture psyche.

The movies he made were some of the biggest of the '80s -- The Outsiders (1983) [see trailer above], Red Dawn (1984), Dirty Dancing (1987), Road House (1989), and Ghost (1990). I'll also put a plug in here for a movie he did in 1995 -- To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar.

But, when I was thinking back over Swayze's life, I was reminded of an image of him that I will never forget and was easily one of the funniest moments in all of television -- the Chippendale try-outs with Swayze and Chris Farley going head to head on Saturday Night Live.
