Quick Movie Review: Moon (2009)

Moon (2009)

Bottomline: Excellent film terrifically written, directed, shot, and acted.

Pros: Sam Rockwell -- Wow. The direction is methodical yet paced well. Running time for the movie clocks in at 1 hour 30 or so minutes -- perfect. Production Design and Art Direction are fantastic.

Cons: Gerty, voiced by Kevin Spacey, is clear HAL 9000 rip-off (or homage?). The music is great in some places but I found it oddly distracting in others --it almost ruined the mood.

Interesting Note: Except for a few folks on a taped video feed, Sam Rockwell is the only live actor in the entire movie.

Interesting Note #2: Duncan Jones has directed one other movie.

Where Can I See It? It's been in wide release for a little while now but, in Birmingham, Alabama, it is playing at the Carmike 16 theater at the Summit.

QMR Opinion: How do you write, produce and direct a SciFi movie that hasn't already been done? Duncan Jones does it with an original screenplay that doesn't shy away from ripping off (or paying homage to) the legacy that is SciFi filmdom. You will see 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). You will see Alien (1979). You will see Blade Runner (1982). But here's the thing. . .the screenplay is so original and the acting by Rockwell is so terrific that you forget that. As a matter of fact, what makes this movie particularly appealing is that you completely buy into the fact that Rockwell is the lone occupant of an outpost on the moon whose sole job is to harvest energy and send it back to earth. The outpost looks lived in. Rockwell looks like a man who has been there for three years. If you are a fan if SciFi, then you must see this film. If you are looking for an original film leanly directed, then this movie is for you. Couple of caveats. . .It earns its "R" rating for rough language and blood. The blood sort of comes at you all at once -- bleeding wounds, blood puking (some of it projectile), some blood spray. etc.
