QMR Retro-Review: The Iron Giant (1999)

For movie lovers, there are a certain handful of movies that we watch over and over. Why? They evoke certain memories or they are so well done that we just can't get enough or they just remind us why it is that we love movies so much.

The Iron Giant does all of that for me. Yes, it gets a little ham-handed with the message, but, when it's all said and done, it's a terrific animated film that captures the essence of what it means to be a kid and to be watching. . .well. . .a cartoon.

The main part of the movie is traditional animation but the giant is actually computer generated. Iron Giant is directed by Brad Bird, one of the Pixar guys who has directed two Pixar films -- The Incredibles (2004) and Ratatouille (2007). The main voice talents are Jennifer Aniston as Annie Hughes and Harry Connick Jr. as Dean. Oddly enough, the voice for the giant is provided by Vin Diesel and this could very well be his best performance ever.

For those of you with young kids (10 or below), be aware that there are some scary scenes and that the movie ends on a bittersweet note.

My recommendation? Rent the DVD, pop the popcorn, get the whole family together, and settle in to watch a terrific animated film.
